Opportunity Description:
TIME COMMITMENT: Minimum 4 month (May 13th through September 17th ) - commitment of 6- 8 hour shift each week.

GOAL: The goal of the Ranger Assistant Volunteer has three goals: 1. to provide visitors with accurate information regarding recreational opportunities and park regulations; 2. to provide assistance during the busy weekends by transporting supplies and equipment to outlying areas of the park as needed; 3. to provide extra support to Park Employees on Launch Ramps and other areas around the Park.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

The duties of the Ranger Assistant Volunteers are to provide visitors with accurate information regarding recreational opportunities and park regulations, provide assistance during the busy weekends by transporting supplies and equipment to outlying areas of the park, and provide extra support to Park Employees on Launch Ramps and other areas around the Park. Volunteers will staff and provide information to the public at various places around the park such as launch ramps, picnic areas, and beaches. Disseminated information will contain boat and water safety procedures, weather conditions, recreational opportunities, and park regulations, especially on glass and Styrofoam prohibition. Provide safe launching information and directing traffic when needed.

OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE: *Greet visitors while walking beaches, launch ramps, and picnic areas. *Stock and maintain information packets and other related materials. *Maintain ramp safety and direct ramp traffic. *Light litter pick-up on ramp and harbor area. *Volunteer will become familiar with park regulation for informational/educational purposes only. *Operate a park radio to advise dispatch of any emergency/EMS or law enforcement situation. *Operate government vehicle to transport supplies and equipment to various areas around the par

BENEFITS AND TRAINING: As a National Park Service volunteer, you will receive on the job training about the National Park Service, Lake Mead, and surrounding area. Volunteer will be trained in all duties and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS DESIRED: Good communication and interpersonal skills. Volunteer must be willing to learn about the National Park Service, Lake Mead, and assist park staff in day to day procedures. Volunteer must have the ability to work with other volunteers, park staff and visitors under extreme conditions - intense heat, large number of people, and exhaust fumes. Volunteer must be flexible and able to adjust to change.

NOTE: Volunteer must be at least 18 years old. A National Park Service Volunteer uniform and name tag will be required.
