Sonoran Desert Outdoor Recreation-Ranger Internships
Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Lower Sonoran Field Office, is seeking two Wilderness/Recreation planning interns to dedicate 10-months (2-month extension possible) to the clean up, management, restoration and protection of the area’s diverse and significant natural resources. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a background in biology, recreation planning, wilderness management and other closely related fields, with a deep interest in advancing their career goals by further developing this dynamic program.
Start Date: October 3rd, 2011
End Date: July - September 2012 (varies)

Location: Lower Sonoran Field Office has stewardship responsibility for approximately 1.4 million acres of public lands in central and southern Arizona. This includes the five hundred thousand acres that constitute the Sonoran Desert National Monument (SDNM). This monument is home to many biologically diverse natural communities such as the large Saguaro cactus forests and harbors many important archaeological and historic sites. Work sites will be scattered throughout the Phoenix District but most of the work to will be performed in the Sonoran Desert National Monument and Lower Sonoran Field Office.

Compensation: Housing allowance of $500-600/month, and a living allowance of $110/week.

Lands in southern Arizona are experiencing severe impacts caused by the illegal smuggling of drugs and humans across the US border with Mexico. The Southern Arizona Project attempts to mitigate such impacts. According to BLM estimates,
