JOB SUMMARY:

Would you like to practice your public speaking skills? As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service, you deliver interpretive programs to educate visitors. You independently present a variety of talks and briefings and respond to visitor questions. Your presentations are generally short and concern park orientation and visitor safety. You explain the area's natural, cultural and/or historic resources, recreational opportunities, concession facilities and services, availability of campgrounds and hiking trails. You provide information on current park events, projects, and policies, as well as updates on issues affecting the natural, historical and/or cultural preservation of the area. Park guides work in or near the park visitor center or visitor contact station, and at auditoriums, campgrounds, trails, or in the field. Other duties may include visitor services such as fee collection, traffic control, back-country patrols, and administrative tasks.
The Seasonal Recruitment Operations Center is currently accepting applications to fill up to 6 temporary positions at Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. Appointments may be terminated at any time and can be extended if workload and funding allow. Anticipated Entry on Duty: Spring 2012
This announcement is being advertised under delegated examining procedures and is open to all U.S. citizens.
This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

MAJOR DUTIES: The incumbent is considered an important member of the park’s front line interpretive operation. He/she greets visitors, responds verbally to visitors’ inquiries for information, direction and guidance, regarding services or activities and provides excellent customer service. The incumbent educates visitors regarding rules, regulations, and safety concerns and directs visitor complaints, problems, or questions to appropriate park staff. The incumbent assists the cooperating association by working in visitor center bookstores, operating a cash register and credit card machine, collecting cash or other payments, and maintaining inventory.
The incumbent serves as a point of contact with park visitors on a daily basis by presenting informational talks, guided tours and demonstrations to various audiences and will assist in making interpretive products (such as preparing labels or signs) for natural, historical, or cultural programs, publications or exhibits. The incumbent will be trained to utilize interpretive techniques when presenting programs (such as metaphors, storytelling, analogies) to facilitate intellectual and/or emotional connections between audiences’ interests and their surroundings.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing for long periods of time, walking for distances up to six miles daily, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items in a repetitive motion is required. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of interpretive programs. Extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue, wildland fire fighting is extremely unlikely and not required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors at the visitors center as well as in outdoor areas resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind and direct sunlight.
AREA INFORMATION:
Petrified Forest National Park is located in northeastern Arizona, bisected by U.S. Interstate 40, approximately 26 miles east of Holbrook, Arizona. The park has a concession operation that includes curio shop, restaurant and gas station. Beyond this, other services are not available in the park. Some shopping opportunities exist in Holbrook. Greater shopping opportunities exist in Flagstaff, AZ (110 miles west) or Gallup, NM (70 miles east). Major shopping centers exist in the metropolitan Phoenix, AZ (225 miles) and Albuquerque, NM (210 miles) areas. Year-around recreational opportunities abound within a short commuting distance. The park is situated on a high plateau with an elevation averaging 5,600 feet, with a semi-arid climate. Summer temperatures can rise over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. A junior college (Northland Pioneer College) campus in Holbrook offers classes and workshops for adult education/enrichment with both day and night classes.
