JOB SUMMARY:

Park Rangers play an essential role in managing the use of park resources and facilitating visitor enjoyment, patrol backcountry areas, provide emergency services, manage wildlife/human interactions on the roadways or in campgrounds, and encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for park resources.
The Seasonal Recruitment Operations Center is currently accepting applications to fill a few temporary positions at Glacier National Park. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year. Appointments may be terminated at any time and can be extended if workload and funding allow. Anticipated Entry on Duty: May, 2012

Area Information:
Glacier National Park- West Glacier: Seasonal food and gas services are available. All services are available in Columbia Falls (19 miles), Kalispell (32 miles) or Whitefish (28 miles).
St. Mary: Seasonal food and gas services available. Most amenities, including medical services are available in Browning (35 miles). Full amenities are also available in Cardston, Alberta, Canada.
Other duty locations may be at: Polebridge, Walton, East Glacier/Two Medicine, Many Glacier, and Goat Haunt.

MAJOR DUTIES: Glacier National Park has Park Ranger (Backcountry) vacancies with the following duties: incumbents perform backcountry patrols on foot, both on and off trail and over snow. Use of boats, stock and pack animals may be required. Serves as primary point of contact for backcountry travelers. Provides educational information to visitors on backcountry use, protection of resources, wildlife safety and park programs and activities. Inspects, monitors, documents and mitigates resource impacts. Works independently in backcountry setting, camping in bear and lion country. Practices Leave No Trace skills. Inspects, repairs, and cleans backcountry areas. Provides emergency medical services and participates in search and rescue activities. May be required to use firearms (darting) as needed and required for wildlife control. Operates two-way radios for communication purposes. May serve as coordinator for backcountry volunteer operations.
Physical Demands: Park Ranger (Backcountry) physical demands can be arduous. Must routinely be able to spend many hours on the trail on foot, horseback, or skis and be able to handle heavy equipment such as chainsaws, logs, bridge planks, etc. In emergencies, may be subject to extreme physical exhaustion during forest fires, mountain or water rescues, long searches in difficult terrain, or pursuit/apprehension of criminals. During trapping operations or other wildlife management actions, must be able to handle large ungulates and carnivores, including the grizzly bear, under controlled situations. Position requires multiple overnight and multi-day backcountry trips. Incumbent must be able to carry a heavy pack over long distances.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in setting in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
